EDUCATION
What is carbon monoxide — and why does it affect almost everyone?
Carbon monoxide (CO) forms anywhere fuels like gas, oil, wood, or coal don't burn completely. The tricky part: it's invisible, odorless, and blocks your body's oxygen uptake — you don't notice it until it's too late. Because CO binds to red blood cells about 300 times more strongly than oxygen, even small amounts are enough: first symptoms can appear at around 35 ppm. For children, pregnant women, the elderly, and pets, the danger is even greater.
Where carbon monoxide comes from
Invisible
Colorless and undetectable to the naked eye
Odorless
No warning smell – your nose won't detect it
Gradual
Often takes effect during sleep, before symptoms appear
Who and where is especially at risk
An earlier warning gives you more time to act.
In Germany, smoke detectors have been mandatory in every state since 2023 — a CO detector is not. The problem: a smoke detector only detects smoke particles, not carbon monoxide. And most CO detectors detect CO exclusively — no natural gas and no propane. Nortivo combines detection of three dangerous gases in one device and warns already at low levels.
What conventional CO & smoke detectors miss
- Smoke detectors only detect smoke — not carbon monoxide
- Most CO detectors detect CO only — not natural gas or propane
- Many devices only alarm at high levels
- No protection against gas leaks from boilers, stoves, or heaters
How Nortivo helps
- Detects carbon monoxide, natural gas & propane — 3 gases in one device
- Warns early, already from 30+ PPM
- Displays all readings live on the built-in display
- Continuous protection via power outlet — no battery changes needed
Don't wait until the alarm comes too late.
Carbon monoxide forms silently and unnoticed. The real danger is believing you're safe, while the detector shows no warning.
5,000+
Poisonings per year
In Germany, around 5,000 people suffer CO poisoning every year.
500+
Deaths annually
About one in ten poisonings is fatal — often during sleep.
Nortivo stops the danger
Nortivo doesn't wait until it gets dangerous. It warns early — giving your family time to act before a late alarm is the first sign.
What carbon monoxide does to the body
Carbon monoxide forms unnoticed, and the first effects often begin before a conventional detector sounds the alarm. That's exactly why early visibility is so important.
30 PPM
Headaches, fatigue, nausea
50 PPM
Strain on the body increases
70 PPM
Only now do most detectors react

Since we plugged the Nortivo in near our heating system, I feel a lot safer — especially because it detects not just CO, but natural gas and propane too. Installation was done in a few minutes.
I didn't realize before that you can neither see nor smell carbon monoxide. With a gas boiler and kids in the house, I didn't want to take any risk. Nortivo gives me a really reassuring feeling!!
With Nortivo we finally found a simple solution to protect our family. What convinces me most is the display with real, live readings.
We travel a lot in our RV, and I hadn't realized for a long time that carbon monoxide can be a real danger there too. Since using Nortivo in the camper, we sleep noticeably calmer and feel safer on every trip.
We only recently looked into the topic, and it was pointed out to us. Nortivo now continuously monitors our air and shows the readings. It gives us a real sense of security — highly recommended!
Developed from the experience of first responders.
Firefighters know the pattern all too well: families rely on a detector that "works" — yet the warning often comes too late. Nortivo makes rising gas levels visible earlier, giving you more time to act.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the alarm go off constantly and become annoying?
No. Nortivo uses smart sensors and algorithms to distinguish between short-term, harmless CO levels (e.g. when cooking with gas) and an actually dangerous buildup of CO (e.g. from a faulty heater or a leaking heat exchanger).
Where should I place the device?
It's best to place a device near the bedrooms, since carbon monoxide incidents often happen at night, when warning signals aren't consciously noticed during sleep. You should also install an additional unit in the living area or near the heating system, since possible sources can originate there.
In multi-story apartments or houses, it's also recommended to use one device per floor to reliably cover everything.
If you have a fireplace, a gas boiler, or a garage directly attached to the house, you should also place a device nearby there. Thanks to its compact design, you can flexibly move Nortivo and plug it in exactly where you need it.
Why is this more expensive than a €30 device from the hardware store?
Many cheap CO detectors only sound the alarm at high levels — meaning your air quality may already have deteriorated significantly before you get any signal at all. On top of that, many of these devices have a limited lifespan, don't show you whether they're still measuring reliably, and only give you a simple "alarm or no alarm" instead of accurate readings.
Nortivo goes a step further: it warns already at lower CO levels, shows you readings in real time, additionally monitors temperature and humidity, and tells you when a replacement makes sense. In the end, it's not just about the price — it's about whether you detect a risk early, or only once it becomes critical.
Does the device also detect propane?
Yes, Nortivo also detects propane. If your main focus is propane, you should definitely plug the device into a low outlet close to the floor. Propane is heavier than air and collects near the ground, while carbon monoxide distributes evenly throughout the air — here, height doesn't matter.
How long does shipping take?
Orders are usually processed within 1–2 business days. After shipping, delivery takes about 4–8 days depending on location. As soon as your order is on its way, you'll receive tracking by email.
Does it matter how high I mount the detector?
For carbon monoxide, it doesn't matter how high you install the detector, since CO distributes evenly throughout the air in a room.
However, if you're mainly using it to detect natural gas (which doesn't pose the same risk of endangering you in your sleep as CO does, but is primarily a fire or explosion risk), you should mount it as high up as possible.
How loud is the alarm? Will it wake me up?
The alarm has a volume of 85 dB — roughly comparable to a blender or heavy city traffic. It's designed so you'll hear it even while asleep and can react immediately.
Is the sensor reliable and accurate?
Yes, Nortivo uses a high-quality electrochemical sensor — the same technology used by safety experts. It's significantly more reliable than cheap semiconductor sensors, which are used in many low-cost devices.
